OUT OF OFFICE

Hello everyone,
just to let you know that I will not be in SMSA tomorrow thus students who need help or advise can seek guidance from the other career officers. I will be back on Saturday :)..

On behalf of the Pre U Careers dept, I'd like to wish all of you:

HAPPY 28TH NATIONAL DAY!

Proud to be a bruneian! Have a great holiday and don't forget to watch tv on Thursday and look out for SMSAnians...

Article 2: WE MADE THE NEWS!

About 30 students from the Pre U 2 classes of Sekolah Menegah Sayyidina Ali attended a briefing facilitated by two representatives from the University of Warwick. Mavis Ow, a senior liaison Manager and Dr Neil Storrey, the director of International recruitment came to inform interested students about the advantages of studying in their academic institution. Dr Neil explained that students who were contemplating of going to top universities should consider Warwick as one of their top choices as the university offers courses most desirable for the students here. In fact, he said that Warwick University is the second most targeted by graduate employers for graduate recruitment programmes in the UK. Therefore, getting a degree in Warwick is considered as a substantial credential as Warwick is ranked top ten in the UK, he claimed.

In his briefing, he also mentioned that the university also provides courses which are ranked within the top ten in the national league tables. The subjects include Accounting and finance, Chemistry, computer Science, engineering, Law, Physincs, English, Mathematics, Politics, Business studies, communication and media studies, Sociology, Drama and many others. Established in 1965, the University of Warwick has more than 22,000 students, a third of whom are overseas students.

The talk ended with a question and answer sessions whereby students inquired mainly of the entry requirements to get to the University. When asked if they offer scholarships for international students, Mavis Ow explained that though they are not offering scholarships for undergraduate students, the university does offer scholarships for postgraduate students, especially those who are interested in doing their pHd.

The talk was part of the Pre U Careers and Higher Learning department's annual activity, headed by Dyg Ummi Kalsum Hj Omar, in its effort to inform students of their choices of courses and careers they can pursue after their two-year A level course as well as to encourage and motivate them to do well in their A levels exam.

Article: CANADIAN EDUCATION FAIR

This post is long overdue and I apologise...I organised a trip to attend the Canadian Education Fair 2 weeks ago and a big thanks goes out to Ms. Erna and Mr. Matt who were willing to go and supervise the students under very short notice. The report of the trip is as follows:

'On the 7th February 2012, about forty students accompanied by two teachers, Ms Erna Hj Sumardi and Mr Matthew Johnson went to the VIP Hall, Rizqun Hotel for the Canadian Educational Fair. The group embarked from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali at about half past twelve and arrived at its destination at around 2pm. A number of universities, polytechnics and colleges were on display which included Laurentian University, Carleton University, Alberta University, Sait Polyyechnic, Alexander College and The Great Lakes College of Toronto. Upon arriving, students were greeted amicably and were given brochures, to answer questions they might have in mind.  Students then went to the booths allocated and began enquiring about the courses they were interested in and especially the requirements needed for admission.

There was also a briefing by one of the Canadian representative, explaining to students the general life in Canada and what studying in Canada could offer to the students. There were also quizzes whereby students could win exciting prizes, souvenirs in fact, that would remind them of Canada. After an hour of browsing through the displays and inquiring, students, after munching on the cuisines the Mall has to offer, then gathered at the lobby of the Rizqun hotel for the final ride home. We also had a moment of panic, with Mr Matthew Johnson counting the number of students again and again, when we lost one of the students, who finally came forward, and informed us that his father was, in fact, picking him up at the hotel. After the excitement had gone down, we then began our journey home.'

Enjoy the pictures of the event:

Once again, a heartful thanks goes to both Ms. Erna and Mr. Matt for accompanying the students to the fair.

HECAS IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!

Good morning people,
HECAS is now open for applications. For those of you who have no clue about what hecas is then let me enlighten you.

In the past, applications to local Higher Education Institutions or Scholarship Section were processed manually. The Ministry of Education reached a Private-Public-Partnership agreement with DST in December 2008 to collaboratively develop and implement an electronic system to process application for undergraduate programmes at Higher Education Institutions in Brunei Darussalam as well as for government scholarships to study abroad. In view of the changing Higher Education landscape in Brunei Darussalam with the increase in number of universities and student population, the implementation of the on-line application procedure (HECAS) is appropriate and timely.

HECAS alllows students to apply on-line to the local higher education institutions or the Scholarship Section through any computers with internet access.

In short, YOU MUST APPLY TO HECAS IF YOU WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FOLLOWING:
1. Scholarship
2. UBD
3. ITB
4. UNISSA
5. Brunei Polytechnic

For further information, please go to www.hecas.edu.bn. Make sure you read all the terms and conditions before applying as well as the entry requirements for each institution. It won't make sense if you wish to apply for a scholarship and only have 200 points because hecas is computerized and you will be rejected. Make the wise decisions in selecting courses because you will be the one studying for the next 3-4 years.

Also, if you wish to apply to hecas but find it difficult to do so e.g no internet access at home then you may set up an appointment with me and I will allow you to do so at the Careers office. If you can't figure out how to enter your details onto hecas, a sample of the application is available at the office too. Please register with dst first before applying for hecas in SMSA.

Please bear in mind:

Commence Date: 20 FEBRUARY 2012 after 7:45 a.m.
Close Date: 15 March 2012 after 4:30 p.m.

Don't forget to prepare your relevant documents (follow each institution's required set) and to fill in borang B (follow each institution's requirements) :

I. Scholarship Section Checklist

Scholarship Section, Ministry of Education, requires only ONE SET of relevant documents and FOUR copies of Borang B even if applicants apply to 2 programmes. Each set consists of a single copy for each completed HECAS application forms, certificates and relevant supporting documents.
If you are applying for a scholarship especially to the UK, then please complete your UCAS applications as I'm just waiting to process them. Don't forget the deadline for SMSA UCAS applications: 15th March 2012 at 5pm

II. Universiti Brunei Darussalam Checklist

UBD requires THREE SETS of relevant documents and FOUR copies of Borang B. Each set consists of a single copy for each completed HECAS application forms, certificates and relevant supporting documents.

III. Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Checklist

UNISSA requires THREE SETS of relevant documents and FOUR copies of Borang B. Each set consists of a single copy for each completed HECAS application forms, certificates and relevant supporting documents.

IV. Institut Teknologi Brunei Checklist

ITB requires THREE SETS of relevent documents and FOUR copies of Borang B.Each set consists of a single copy of each completed HECAS application form, certified academic achievements and relevent suppporting documents.

V. Brunei Polytechnic Checklist

BP requires THREE SETS of relevant documents and FOUR copies of Borang B. Each set consists of a single copy of each completed HECAS application form, certified academic achievements and relevant supporting documents.

**I would recommend for each student to make a  checklist of your own so you won't miss any relevant documents and deadlines.

I shall be updating all the HECAS information at the Careers office so you can take a look as well.

**To ALL SMSA students who are applying for hecas, can you also please submit a COPY of your submitted hecas application to the Careers office for recordkeeping.

UCAS APPLICATION 2ND ROUND DEADLINE

Hello everyone,
This post goes out to ALL students who plan to continue their studies in the United Kingdom starting September 2012. As most of you are aware, you MUST apply to UCAS in order to secure a place in a UK university. Regardless whether or not you are applying for a scholarship, if you meet the requirements to be eligible then you must ensure a place in university. Scholarships will be awarded to students who have places in a prestigious university so please make sure your grades meet the minimum requirements. Don't just 'try' to apply to a university then complain when you are rejected.

I'm surprised that most of you who are qualified for scholarships have not even registered on UCAS. If you haven't, please do so immediately. Don't wait until there is an email from us asking you to start your UCAS application, do it NOW! Also, detailed procedures on how to register and apply to UCAS has been posted in this blog, search for it yourselves. Another important issue is that some of you have registered to UCAS but have not filled in the SMSA reference form. This form is essential for us to write you the reference that will be sent to the universities. Again, please make sure that your reference form is complete including your relevant documents otherwise we will not start your reference.

Lastly, you should be writing drafts of your personal statements and kindly ask your GP tutors to proofread for you. Once this is done, you can email me your PS and I will give the final approval. GP tutors are given the rights to comment freely on your work and please respect their feedback to you.

If you are in a dilemma in choosing the right degree course in university, don't hesitate to contact us. If you also have trouble in finding a suitable university to accommodate your needs, then please ask us for advice.

Therefore, the deadline for the 2nd round of UCAS applications is:

Thursday, 15th March 2012
Final application will be submitted at: 5.00 pm (Brunei time), 9.00am (UK time)

Failure to submit your UCAS application on time will result in carrying forward your application in June instead.

Thank you for your cooperation.

SMSA's Pride & Joy (1): Nurliza Abd Zabar

I am proud to present to you the first inspirational article in 2012. Nurliza is an ex-SMSAnaian who did not give up and a successor in the UniBridge programme. I hope you all will read and learn her journey as an undergraduate.
Foreword: All the best for your ‘A’ level results! And, if you are disappointed with your results, I hope my article will inspire you to not give up yet. Indeed, disappointing results are hard to handle and my article is focusing on that issue and beyond.

The transition of a pre-university student to a university student: How did it happen?
I have never felt a greater shock, than I did upon receiving my GCE ‘A’ Levels. With the set of results I got, I knew my direct degree entrance to (no misspellings here) Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) would be rejected due to the lack of points, let alone wanting to apply for an overseas scholarship from the Ministry of Education (MOE) or from other private institutions. Back then, I really thought there were only two choices left for me. It was either to repeat the ‘A’ levels, which was already a hellish nightmare that I refused to go through again, or to find work and stop studying for the rest of my life. Indeed, the results had a great impact on my well-being and my consciousness of studying.
During the depressing times, I stumbled upon UBD’s University Bridging (UniBridge) programme on their official website, which gives people who are not entitled for direct degree entry to UBD a second chance for education. In order to fully understand how UniBridge works, I attended UBD’s Open Day in 2011 for more information about this programme. The people who were in charge of the UniBridge booth were very informative and I was very glad to know that I may have a chance to study again.
I worked part time for a month and a half and realized, being employed at a meager wage is not something that I desire, especially in this country, and I needed to do something to escape. I refused to give up the opportunity to study and tried my luck at applying for UniBridge.
UniBridge was not cheap at first glance, even for local students like me where I had to pay $2000 for this programme. It is a one semester (5 month) full-time programme in which we had to study 4 modules. Being raised by a single mother with 4 other younger siblings, $2000 is not easy money and it is not something to simply waste. $2000 is not just $2000. Imagine that amount which could be used to sustain our needs. I wouldn’t have had to pay any fees if I was offered a direct degree entrance.
After a month or two of waiting, I was finally accepted to UniBridge, and I regarded this as a milestone in my life. Then onwards, I considered myself as a university student, despite not fully a ‘university’ student (no puns intended!). We were briefed by the programme leader about UniBridge and its mechanisms on the orientation day. After the briefing, I knew, by hook or by crook, I had to pass the examinations in order for an unconditional offer to study Bachelor of Arts, a type of degree offered at UBD. I couldn’t risk the $2000 that my mum had stored for emergency purposes and to pay even more if I fail the examinations. It was a ‘do-or-die’ situation for me.
I was conscious of the duration of UniBridge and the amount of work that I had to handle. It was definitely not a walk in a park. From ‘adding’ modules for examinations purposes to completing university level assignments, everything must be done individually. We are responsible for what we do in the programme and have to be aware of changes or announcements. These tasks in some ways have helped me to be a more responsible university student. I don’t expect my lecturers to spoon-feed us as I believe they treat us like any other university students and most of them did no spoon-feeding.
'Adding' modules for examination purposes
In the beginning, I was surprised about lectures and how they were conducted. In previous educational institutions that I have had experience studying in, I was used to a class of 20 to 40 people. Our UniBridge class was very large, about 180 students, so for some lectures, they were conducted at a large lecture hall. Imagine having a lecturer speaking to 180 students, amidst a few chatterboxes at the back. For most of the time, the lecturer just continued teaching and ignored those who refused to pay attention. Attending lectures is really the students’ responsibility and it is entirely up to you if you want to listen or not. Well, it may sound cool to just enter a lecture hall and do nothing (‘Like a Boss’) but the consequences are horrendous. And I knew that I wanted to pay attention so that I would not miss out anything important. But of course, there were also classes with a smaller number of students.
There were times when I wanted to drill my brain with a chainsaw (literally!) because of the complicated assignments, but my lecturers were willing to help me since I asked for their advice. From this experience, I realized that university lecturers would not help you if you did not seek help from them in the first place, as lecturers themselves have research and other priorities. Some of the lecturers may look scary on the surface, but their intention is pure hearted. I would usually email them to set up an appointment before knocking on their office doors as to respect their time.
Along the way I did make new friends. Initially I was paranoid about this because most of the people I met are not from the same school. However, that was not a difficult obstacle to overcome. Since I live quite far from UBD, it was wise for me to stay at hostel instead of commuting back and forth every day for school. Staying at a hostel taught me to be independent as well.
Now that I am a university student at UBD, I have reminisced my times at UniBridge and wondered, “Where would I be now if it was not for that programme?” I might have given up hope on education, which I think is the most important aspect in our lives. I was grateful that I was given a second chance to study and made full use of it. I do see some of my friends who did not go through UniBridge and are one semester ahead of me. Personally, I feel that there’s nothing wrong with being the ‘later’ students to enter UBD, although we graduated together from 6th form college. It is the matter of determination to do well.
I know the adventure of my university life has just begun. I shall end with a quote from my lecturer: “You give yourself the grades.”
-Nurliza binti Abd. Zabar of SMSA intake 2009.
(Currently majoring in Professional Communications and Media, Minor in Japanese)

What are you suppose to DO now??

Hello everyone...
I've had an interesting day today: mostly seeing ex-SMSA students who are looking for answers on what to do next...here are some guidelines:

1. If you are qualified for scholarships (260 points above) then please email me (if you can't see me personally) your details as mentioned in the previous post. Scholarship details are also posted recently so you have an idea of what to apply. Moreover, most of you are nonchalantly waiting for I-don't-know what or who to tell you what to do. Scholarships will not be awarded to you straightaway..there are procedures to follow. For example, if you are thinking of applying to the UK then YES, it is COMPULSORY to apply to UCAS (details have been posted). Before that, you must also fill in the SMSA reference form (get it from us) so that your tutors can recommend you for the scholarships.
Please do not wait until the very last minute to do these things because I will be posting the deadline for UCAS very soon. Speaking of which, most of you have also NOT done your personal statements. Again, details on how to write PS were posted and you know who to ask for to proofread your PS.

I've only received emails from 10 students who are qualified to apply for scholarships but there should be more than 30 of you who have achieved excellent grades. Please pass this information to your friends as well just in case they have no idea about what is going on. I'll be monitoring UCAS very closely so make sure you are updating your application.

2. A lot of students are also asking for the HECAS application from us. It is an ONLINE application and has not opened for registration. Please wait for the official announcement most probably next week. I will also post it here should I hear about it.

3. Also, more students are asking about HND scholarships: the minimum requirement is 160 point however these are only meant for selected courses.

"Think before you act, make the wise decision because it is your future"
